Some believe it's what lies at the end of a rainbow. Totally disappointing.

the Slimepedia

Painted Hens are a chicken variant found exclusively in The Glass Desert by nests accompanied by their chickadoo counterparts and occasionally a Roostro, but can also be found in crates in The Glass Desert, and offered as a reward on the Range Exchange if The Glass Desert has been unlocked.

When in the presence of a Roostro, Painted Hens will lay eggs which immediately hatch into Painted Chickadoos, which will grow up into either a Painted Hen or a Roostro. This process is more efficient in a coop, especially when upgraded. When laying an egg, it has a chance to become an Elder Hen.

Slimepedia Entry

About:
Painted Hens are the colorful chicken variants found in the Glass Desert. It is unknown what caused their rainbow-like plumage to occur. One theory suggests their colors are a biological mimicry of the prismatic glass found within the desert, while another theory states that their wild colors made them the dominant mates of Cluck Kingdoms and thus were banished to the desert by a coalition of jealous chickens who couldn't compete with these fashionable fouls.

But the latter theory is only believed by one strange person, so we're not sure why it would have been included here.

On the Ranch:
Painted Hens in close proximity to roostros will periodically lay eggs that produce painted chickadoos. However, keeping too many hens or roostros in close proximity make them anxious and egg production will come to a halt. Savvy ranchers with an understanding of the complex nature of chicken romance always keep their coops from exceeding 12 grown chickens."

Because they are often found together, this map also applies to Painted Chickadoos and Roostros.

Origin

The Painted Hen's name (and by extension, the Chickadoo), its vibrant red and blue plumage, and being found in the desert, may be a reference to the Painted Desert, a desert in Arizona which is known for its brilliant coloration which spans from red to lavender.

Trivia

  • Painted Hens move twice as fast as other hens.[citation needed]
